Lilac: A Walk Through the Boston Common

"This composition is inspired by the first bud of spring when walking through the Boston Common. The piece starts softly with the strings walking in pizzicato, then the woodwinds begin to enter representing a person getting further into the park. The main melody is very soft just like fresh flower buds, and continues to flow throughout the tune. When writing this piece I was trying to think of things I loved and/or cared about and the strings ostinato came to mind along with the image of Lilacs in the Boston Common."  Jae VanDerWielen

White Elk

"This composition is inspired by the Chinese instrument, erhu. At the time I had been listening to a whole range of traditional Chinese songs and melodies.  I was inspired by the differences between eastern and western chord progressions and the beautiful way melodies are played through an erhu."  Jae VanDerWielen

Sleep My Child

"Being relatively new to composition, I find myself with many short melodic phrases both in my head and on paper. I have been working on and off on this piece for a few months now, and I believe this is a work in progress, but I also believe that it’s getting close."  Jae VanDerWielen
